Keep screen awake

Stop your screen from sleeping while this tab is open.

Runs in this tab. The file stays here.

Screen can sleep

Uses the Screen Wake Lock API. It lasts only while this tab is open and visible; closing the tab or switching away releases it.

This runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

About Keep screen awake

Stops your screen from dimming or sleeping while this tab stays open and visible, using the browser's Screen Wake Lock API.

Handy for a recipe on a tablet, a long download you are watching from the couch, a dashboard on a spare monitor, or a presentation you do not want dimming. Click Keep awake and the page asks the browser to hold a screen wake lock. The status text changes to Screen will stay on, and the button becomes Turn off. Click it again, or close the tab, and the normal timeout returns.

The Wake Lock API is not available everywhere. If your browser lacks it, the page says Not supported in this browser and the button is disabled. The browser can also refuse the request, for example on low battery or in battery saver mode, and the page shows the error text it receives. The lock is released whenever the tab is hidden or the window is minimised; this page asks for it again when the tab becomes visible, as long as you had it switched on.

It keeps the screen on, not the whole computer. Closing a laptop lid, a power-button press or a system sleep policy still puts the machine to sleep, and a locked screen ends the lock. It does not simulate mouse movement, so it will not stop a chat app marking you as away. There are no timers or schedules, only on and off. Nothing is stored or sent.

How to use Keep screen awake

  1. 1Click Keep awake and check that the status reads Screen will stay on.
  2. 2Leave this tab open and visible, in front of other tabs.
  3. 3Click Turn off when you are done, or close the tab.

What it won't do

  • Needs a browser with Wake Lock support.
  • Works only while the tab is open and visible.
  • Keeps the screen on, not the whole system; no timer or schedule.

Common questions

Why does keep awake stop when I switch tabs?

Browsers release wake locks for hidden pages. Bring this tab back to the front and the page requests the lock again by itself, provided you had it switched on.

Will keep awake stop my laptop sleeping when I close the lid?

No. It only asks the browser to keep the screen from dimming or sleeping. Closing the lid, pressing the power button or a system sleep policy still puts the computer to sleep.

Why does keep awake say it is not supported or show an error?

Older browsers do not offer the Screen Wake Lock API, and a supporting browser can still refuse, for example in battery saver mode or on low charge. Try a current browser or plug in the device.

Does keep awake stop a chat app showing me as away?

No. It does not move the mouse or send input, so apps that track activity will still treat you as idle.

Why this one doesn't upload your file

There is no server to upload to. This page is a static file, and the work happens in your browser using the same graphics and WebAssembly code that renders every other site you visit. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed, and handed back as a download. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network entirely and it keeps working. The longer explanation
