About Webcam test

Preview your camera and read the resolution and frame rate the browser actually received. The video stays in your browser and is not recorded.

Use this to confirm that a webcam works, that the browser can reach it, and what quality it is really getting before you join a meeting. Click Allow camera, accept the permission prompt, and a live preview appears with a small readout underneath showing width, height and frame rate, for example 1280×720 and 30 fps.

That readout is what this session negotiated, not what the camera box promises. The page asks for video with the browser's default settings, and browsers often settle on a modest size such as 640 by 480 or 720p even when the sensor can do more. A USB hub, a shared bus or a low-light mode can also lower the frame rate. If the readout says fps n/a, the browser did not report one for this stream.

There is no camera picker on this page: it opens the default camera your browser selects, so on a laptop with an external webcam you may need to change the default in the browser's site settings and reload. There is no Stop button either, and no snapshot or recording. The stream is shown in a muted video element and released when you leave the page. Camera access only works on HTTPS pages, and an app that already has the camera open may block it.

How to use Webcam test

  1. 1Click Allow camera and accept the browser permission prompt.
  2. 2Check that the preview shows what you expect.
  3. 3Read the resolution and frame-rate line under the video.
  4. 4Leave the page when you are done to release the camera.

What it won't do

  • Opens the default camera only; no device picker, snapshot or recording.
  • The readout shows the browser's negotiated size, not the camera's maximum.
  • Needs an HTTPS page and camera permission.

Common questions

Why is the webcam test resolution lower than my camera's spec?

The page requests a default video stream and the browser chooses a mode, often 640 by 480 or 1280 by 720. The line under the preview shows what this session received, which can be well below the maximum on the box.

Does the webcam test record or upload my video?

No. The stream is shown in a muted video element in this tab. There is no recording, snapshot or upload code, and the camera is released when you leave the page.

Can I pick which camera the webcam test uses?

Not here. It opens the browser's default camera. To test another one, change the camera in the browser's site settings or disconnect the others, then reload and click Allow camera again.

The webcam test shows a black picture or an error. What now?

Close any app that is already using the camera, check the camera privacy switch or shutter, and allow access from the address bar if the permission was denied. Then reload the page.

Why this one doesn't upload your file

There is no server to upload to. This page is a static file, and the work happens in your browser using the same graphics and WebAssembly code that renders every other site you visit. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed, and handed back as a download. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network entirely and it keeps working. The longer explanation
