JPG is the usual photographic JPEG. No transparency. AVIF is often smaller than WebP at the same viewing size. This page is only that pair. It is not a generic dump box that guesses the destination after an upload. If you have a different container, use that format's hub instead of forcing the file through the wrong decoder.

AVIF is a lossy target, and the source is already compressed once. Re-encoding throws away some detail. I will not call the result identical to the source. If you need a lossless container, this is the wrong pair — pick PNG or FLAC or WAV where those exist. Quality sliders on stills are honest: lower means more of the picture is discarded.

Does converting JPG to AVIF upload the file?

Will JPG to AVIF look or sound the same?
Close, if you keep quality high, not identical. AVIF compresses. A second generation on top of JPG is a real cost. If the result looks chewed, raise quality or pick a lossless pair.
Why is there a separate JPG to AVIF page instead of one converter?
Searchers type this pair. A generic convert tool with a dropdown is easy to build and easy to bury. Each pair is its own URL, its own title, and a file picker that expects JPG. The generic pickers still live at video convert and audio convert if you want a dropdown.
