About Expense tracker
Log expenses with a date, description, category, and amount, and see totals by category. Entries are saved in this browser only, and you can export or import CSV.
Fill in the date (today by default), a short description, a category, and an amount, then press Add expense; Enter works from the description and amount boxes too. The table lists entries newest first, with a filter to show one category, and the Totals column adds up every category from biggest to smallest with a grand total underneath. Categories are free text. Eight starting ones (Food, Housing, Transport, Utilities, Health, Entertainment, Shopping, Other) are suggested, and anything new you type is added to the list. Amounts have no currency symbol, so it works for any currency, as long as you stick to one. A negative amount works as a refund.
Everything is kept in this browser's local storage on this device, under this site's address. There's no account, no server copy, and no sync. That has consequences: clearing site data deletes the lot, a different browser or profile starts empty, a private window forgets everything when it closes, and your phone and laptop won't share anything. The page doesn't warn you when the browser refuses to save (a full or blocked store fails silently), so if the records matter, export a CSV from time to time and keep the file somewhere safe.
CSV is the way in and out. Export CSV writes four columns: date, description, category, and amount; text that begins with a character a spreadsheet might read as a formula gets a leading apostrophe, so opening it in Excel is safe. Import CSV reads the same four columns and appends the rows to what you already have. It doesn't replace or de-duplicate, so importing the same file twice doubles your entries. There is no editing of an existing entry: delete it with the cross and add it again. There's also no monthly view, budget, chart, or recurring entries. It's a ledger and a category total, which is often all you need.
How to use Expense tracker
- 1Enter the date, a description, a category, and the amount.
- 2Press Add expense, or Enter.
- 3Use the Show filter to look at one category; the totals always cover everything.
- 4Export CSV regularly as your backup.
What it won't do
- Saved in local storage only: no sync, no account, and lost if site data is cleared.
- No editing, monthly view, budgets, charts, or currency handling.
- CSV import appends and does not de-duplicate.
Common questions
Where is my data stored?
In local storage in this browser, on this device, for this site. Nothing is sent to a server. Clearing browser data, switching browsers or profiles, or using a private window means the entries won't be there.
How do I move my expenses to another device?
Export CSV on the first device, copy the file across, and use Import CSV on the second. Import adds to what's already there, so do it on an empty tracker to avoid duplicates.
Can I edit an entry?
No. Delete it with the cross at the end of the row and add it again with the right values.
Does it show monthly totals or a budget?
No. Totals are by category across every entry, with a grand total. For a month, export the CSV and filter it in a spreadsheet, or clear the tracker when a new month starts.

Why this one doesn't upload your file
There is no server to upload to. This page is a static file, and the work happens in your browser using the same graphics and WebAssembly code that renders every other site you visit. Your file is read from disk into memory, processed, and handed back as a download. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the network entirely and it keeps working. The longer explanation
